The Boatmen Dinner 2017 turned out to be a pleasant event. The dining room was crowded with the boatmen and their families, each one enjoying the meal and sharing in company and laughter.
At the end of the dinner, Donncha said a few words, reporting the activities of GHA, what was achieved till now and the Committee’s plans for the future development.
The prize-giving then followed, starting with some special prizes kindly offered by Dubarry to Ronan O’ Briain, as the best sailor of the year and to Cathal “Cookie” O’Griofa - the best young sailor of the year - who was virtually present in a nice video recorded on board of the ship where he is at present for a stage.
A new trophy, offered by Seanchaí Editions, especially aimed at a person who has been prominent in promoting and spreading the image of Galway Hooker, was awarded this year to Johnny Healion, whose merits were acknowledged in a short video about his work on “Morning Star”, the boat he took back in Carna after an attentive restoration: his sailing during the Mc Dara festival in 1976 sparkled the revival of Galway Hookers. “Well done Johnny and many thanks!”
The evening went on with the prize-giving of the artistic GHA trophies to the winners in each class of Hookers, so once again “Well done!” to the crews of An Tonaí, Norah, Naomh Ciarán, Mc Hugh and Sruthán Buí.
The “formal” event thus over, everyone joined in chatting and dancing on the music by “Fóidín Meara”.
All in all, an enjoyable evening for all the people gathered at an Óstán an Cheathrú Rua; our special thanks to Donncha Mac Con Iomaire, Stiofán de Bhailís and Maria Ní Chonghaile, who worked hard for this successful Dinner!
